A couple of weeks back, I went to Dana-Farber with Brendan and mom. During that visit, Brendan had a bone marrow biopsy. His mom let me know the results. She said Brendan is clear of relapse at this time which is great news! She also said that there is an increase in megakaryocyte which is consistent with Evans Syndrome.
Evans syndrome is a very rare autoimmune disorder in which the body makes antibodies that destroy the red blood cells, platelets and white blood cells. Brendan has shown symptoms of neutropenia, an abnormally low count of white blood cells. Neutropenia happens in 15% of Evans syndrome patients.
I’m not sure how long-term this condition will be for Brendan. It has been a long two years for Brendan and his family. He is racing to the finish of his chemo treatments, hoping to put this behind him and get to be a kid once again.
